Upgrades 19. Aeroscreen

A carbon fibre aeroscreen with retaining channels and carbon fibre mirror popped up for sale on BlatChat which I immediately jumped on. I was never going to buy this set at it's full price as I'll likely only use it a few times on the track (full price it is somewhere close to £1350!). The retaining channels were installed as per a previous post and then I was ready to attempt to install the screen.

The first thing I did was remove all the rubber trim as it was very brittle (I guess it had been on for many years for the previous owner), and then clean it up using some WD40 and then some woodsilk polish. Once I was happy with it, I then put another trim around the whole thing and super glued it in some select few places, to make it easier to remove again if necessary. I had to buy some more trim from the Caterham parts website to do this.

I can now easily remove the windscreen, so I removed the windscreen ready for the test fit. This presented two problems

  • The first is that the current drilled holes on the sides are not quite in the right place, and so they will need to be adjusted by a few mm on each side. I'll simply use a Dremel/drill/file to do this.
  • The second is that the poppers which connect to the central scuttle popper bases (which are now mounted on my mobile phone holder) are also in the wrong place, so these will need adjusting on the aero too, I removed the old poppers with a drill to leave the old two holes which I used for reference when adjusting.

After a small session with a file I was happy with the location of the side holes, and so I did a loose fit of the screen to test it, from here I had to measure where the new holes for the poppers would go. It turns out that I needed to bring them both in by about 9mm, which meant it was easy to just drill two new holes for the poppers. Of course, this left the other 2 holes visible, so I decided to buy some slim penny washers which would cover them up on the top between the poppers and the aero screen. see below.

Once the poppers were in place, I could fit the entire thing once more and test how it looked, I have the master cut off switch on the drivers side and so when I started to fit the bracket for this over the aero, I noticed that it would no longer fit flush, so I bought some M8 black standoffs (M8 x 14mm x 12mm to allow it to fit nice and flush and look like it is meant to be there.

I had a set of black spa mirrors left over from my mirror tests, I mounted these on the screen where the previous owner had done the same. I bought some mirror/aero 3d printed bases from Uberniche to make them fit nice and neat too.

This is how it looks now it is finished, the eagle eyes among you will notice that my passenger seat is still different to the drivers as my heated version is still being investigated under warranty.
